In addition to Fall, Spring, and Orientation Terms, the Big Picture students have Service Learning Term, and Explore Week.
During Explore Week, each staff member chooses a topic area and designs a unique project to offer opportunities that students might not have otherwise. In 2017, I took part in the Wilderness Expedition where we practiced winter tracking, first aid, and responsible route planning. We spent one day hiking trails in Bolton, Vermont. The next day, we tackled a bigger challenge by snowshoeing up a portion of Mount Mansfield.
SLT is usually a few weeks in April where students band together for a staff supported group project. In 2017, I was part of the Vulnerable Pollinators group. We investigated the reasons behind colony collapse disorder, and worked with several community partners including two PhD candidates from UVM, John Hayden from The Farm Between in Jeffersonville and Jon Turner at Wild Roots Farm in Bristol. We helped with regenerative farming practices like planting bee-friendly trees and shrubs, as well as creating a physical infographic display with information about bee health by painting on recycled beehive boxes.
